一、Program Overview

The Doctorial Program of Design Science and Engineering is a cross-platform program contained four major disciplines including design, engineering, management engineering and ecology. It also connects with other disciplines such as material science and engineering, environmental engineering, computer science, electronic engineering, phycology, control management, etc. The interdisciplinary program of Design Science and Engineering build on the base of master’s program of design with additional focus on integrated innovation on the disciplines of mechanic engineering and management engineering. As Mechanic Engineering and Management Science and Engineering in Shanghai Jiao Tong University are China’s Focus Majors, they provide strong supports to develop this crossover program.  It’s a pioneering integrated program.

二、Program Objective

This interdisciplinary program is aimed at nurturing students specialized in Design Innovation, Smart Manufacturing, Quality Management, Brand Services areas which require integrated thinking as well as scientific research skills. They will be embedded in Chinese culture but also with global views. Students will obtain theoretical and practical capability, learn the latest theories and be able to solve the conjunction problems from design engineering and management areas with proper methodologies.

三、Study Period

This is a full-time Doctorial program with the normal length of 3-6 years.

四、  Curriculum and Credits

Before graduation, a student must complete totally 26 credit hours, including 14 credit hours of required courses. Students should finish the courses in two semesters. A student can enroll in at most 13 credit hours each semester. In addition, the GPA of the student must be above 2.0 for graduation purpose.

五、Academic Paper

Before the students’ final defense, the student must publish at least 2 academic papers.

The 2 publications could be 2 journal publications in CSSCI or TSSCI journals, or 1 publication in SCI, SSCI or A&HCI Journals. If the student has a National research Award, he/she can waive this requirement. If the student has any high-level research award, or has any innovation patent, it equals the same number of SCI or EI journal articles.

The 2 academic publications could also be papers accepted by international conferences with broad international influence (which need to be proved by the academic committee of the department).

The student as the first author or corresponding author in the SSCI journal is counted as 1 piece of publication. The student as second author (in this case his/her advisor as first author) is calculated as 1/2 piece of publication. Third author will not be calculated. For international conference papers, the student should be the first/corresponding author as well in order to make the article calculated as his/her publications.

六、  Dissertation Description

The dissertation should focus on the issues in the field of conjunction of design science and engineering, obtain practical and theoretical values, meet the standards of academic writing, and fully demonstrate the students’ creativeness and capacity in related theories and practices. Also, the students must write the dissertation independently with the guidance of supervisors.

The student has to pass the qualification exam before he/she can do the dissertation proposal defense.  First, the dissertation should be reviewed by a review committee which consists of more than 2 experts with the rank of associate professor or above. After that the dissertation should be orally defended by students in front of a defense committee which consists of 3-5 experts in the given area. The student has to meet the requirement of the credits, GPA and publication by the university requirement in order to have his/her dissertation defense.

Pre oral defense will set up according to student's progress, usually in 7th term, final oral defense will be 8th term.

七、  Dissertation Proposal

The dissertation proposal should be conducted under the guidance of the instructor, which concludes research, status, significance and value of the topic in the current research at home and abroad, and the main condition, the research basic mentality, frame structure, schedule and so on for individual study. Also, the research needs to be funded by specific project. Students must also put forward design draft, supporting theory and research methods. At least 50 literatures are required for the references. The script of the proposal needs to be done two years in prior to the final defense.

 The student has to finish writing the proposal and hand in the proposal through the university system before the assigned deadline by the department. Usually in the March-April of the 4th term, the department will organize the defense of dissertation proposal.
