Its research focuses are architectural design and methods, built heritage conservation and adaptive reuse, energy-saving and green building technologies and design, and tools for rapid urban growth and planning. The Department of Architecture promotes a leading education that combines forefront academic research with professional experience. It has high-calibre academic talent and an international curriculum. This allows it to train intellectually well-rounded students–the future leaders and innovators in the field.
Teaching Goals
We aim to equip students with a broad intellectual foundation in technology, the humanities, arts, social, environmental sciences, and other areas. We aim to work with people who possess strong architectural design abilities. We look for students who have an aptitude to combine theory and practice in work in China and in the larger world. In the process of both inheriting past approaches and innovating new ones, students can be taught to bring together many fields. They can harmoniously combine research abilities from different disciplines while putting various practical and technical skills to use.
The teaching at Department of Architecture has two major aspects. One is to encourage students to pursue the scientific spirit of constant study and innovation. Such students are able to deepen the study of architecture and cities, and to become familiar with leading research in the field. They shall aspire to become outstanding professionals with the ability to compete on an international stage.
Secondly, it encourages students to have a sturdy professional foundation, with practical abilities and an innovative outlook. This allows them to be industry leaders in design and research in both architectural and urban work.
Degree Structure
The department boasts a five-year undergraduate program, as well as a masters program. Every year the program admits approximately 50 undergraduate students. Our teaching method is both practical and flexible. We allow students to graduate early if they have already attained 221 required credits. We also allow students to extend their studies, although generally students do not take more than seven years to complete the degree. The program also has a masters program with about 20 graduate students admitted each year.
Teaching Characteristics
The Department of Architecture is known for hosting guest lectures from leading architects, international cooperation, interdisciplinary studies, specialist teaching, and collaboration with domestic and international design firms on projects outside of campus.
After Graduation
Graduates often proceed to outstanding schools in China and abroad to further their studies. They also often go on to work in top architectural design, real estate development, or in the government sector. Others pursue their own innovative endeavours or enter other related work.
