Program Overview

This is the 8th international summer school on urban ecology co-organized by Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) and the Society for Urban Ecology (SURE). It aims to introduce the state of the art in theories, methods, and practices in urban biodiversity and conservation at the global perspective and comparison. Shanghai, as one of the most urbanized cities in China, is undoubtedly a living laboratory and best place to study urban biodiversity, and serves as the perfect site for practices. The summer school was deliberate to disseminate cutting-edge knowledge in urban biodiversity, to inspire novel ideas and thoughts, to activate and bridge the collaborations among the participants.

Highlights

The summer school will focus on hotspot of urban biodiversity and the nexus of human activities, human habitats, and urban biodiversity. We aim to explore how to protect biodiversity in urban areas, to introduce the cutting-edge knowledge, the state-of-the-art theories, and approaches in urban biodiversity, to enhance the capability and understanding of biodiversity and conservation in theories and practices.

About Faculty

We intend to invite distinguished scientists in urban biodiversity field. The potential tutors are listed, but not limited to the following professors, such as, Prof. Marc Cadotte (University of Toronto, Canada); Prof. Zdeňka Lososová (Masaryk University, Czech); Prof. Sonja Knapp (Environmental Research - UFZ, Germany); Prof. Amy K. Hahs (University of Melbourne, Australia); Prof. Myla F. J. Aronson (Rutgers University, The United States); Prof. Jurgen Breuste (University of Salzburg, Austria); Prof. Jun Yang (Department of Earth System Science, Tsinghua University); Prof. Junxiang Li (School of Design, Shanghai Jiao Tong University).

Activities: Lectures, seminars, courses, field investigation, report.

Application

Application time: 2022.04.05 to 2022.06.25

Expected registration date: 2022.08.07 

Application method: Overseas students please complete and submit an online application at Study@SJTU (http://apply.sjtu.edu.cn); Domestic students: send application materials to caiyanwu@sjtu.edu.cn (copy of ID card or passport, English proficiency certificate (not necessary for students whose mother language is English), CV, motivation).

Eligibility: we can receive totally 40 Master and PhD students from domestic and international universities or institutes. The participant whose research interest in urban ecology, landscape architecture, landscape design are encouraged. 

Scholarship

The project can provide the student accommodation in SJTU. The international travel and accommodation will be covered for successful international student applicants including round-trip economic flight tickets not more than 5000 RMB from Asia, and 2000 US dollars from the other countries and regions. The accommodation fee is less than 300 RMB/day in the Minhang campus of SJTU, please apply before May 20, 2022.
