Shanghai Jiao Tong School of Design
English-based MS Program Admission Guide
With the goal of serving the country's innovation-driven development strategy, and of developing Shanghai as a globally influential science and technology innovation center and “City of Design,” as well as enhancing China's innovative design capabilities, Shanghai Jiao Tong University is now launching an international full-time master’s degree program in International Industrial Design Engineering (IIDE), relying on the advantages and characteristics of the university’s international educational environment. 2020 will be the first year to start IIDE program with taking in one class.
The IIDE program aims to enable resident Chinese students to receive a world-class design education and to cultivate leaders in the field of design without travelling abroad. It features the following elements:
1. The School of Design is using the foundation built on the basis of its existing well-established cooperation with several first-class design, art and architecture schools worldwide to set up a full-time master's degree program taught in English and with an advanced curriculum. The ultimate goal of the initiative is to establish world-class international design education.
2. Professors and lecturers from leading world-universities and outstanding designers at home and abroad such as SAIC, COMAC, Alibaba, Huawei, and Tencent will be invited as course tutors. The faculty will be represented by a combination of permanent staffs and semester-based external staffs. Semester-based external staffs from other world-class universities will account for nearly 50% of the total faculty. This well-reflects the international first-class standards and characteristics that define the school and program.
3.The program will consist of simultaneous enrollment both at home and abroad. The ratio of students (at home and abroad) will approach 1:1 as the program matures. This will allow for fully realized international exchange and synergy of design ideas.
4. Abundant opportunities for study and exchange abroad will be provided in collaboration with cooperating universities. This will allow students to experience different design cultures.
5. In addition, a wealth of internship opportunities in diverse fields will be established with top-leading companies in China and abroad. Students can enrich their engineering design experience, cross-cultural cooperation abilities and international vision through such programs.
In 1986, Shanghai Jiao Tong University founded its faculty of design based on the advice of Qian Xuesen, one of SJTU’s prestigious scholars. In 1999, the faculty began to enroll students in the MA Design Art program and in 2011 in a MA of Design Studies as well. In 2015, a cross-disciplinary doctoral program in Design Science and Engineering was established. In December 2017, the university integrated high-quality resources in design subjects, and created the School of Design. “Innovative Design” became one of the 17 subject groups of Shanghai Jiao Tong University's “double first-class” endeavor. The subject group aims to rely on the attributes of the school of design. It is designed to focus on national development strategic requirements, and highlights the advantages and features of Jiao Tong University. It is based on a platform of scientific research and talent cultivation that integrates science, technology, the humanities and the arts. It creates a prestigious institutional example of international academic collaboration and gathers the world's top masters of design. It will eventually form a distinctive international first-class innovative design subject group. In 2018, the first batch of doctoral programs in Design Studies in China were independently added. The International Industrial Design Engineering (IIDE) degree program was launched in 2019. In the UK QS World University Rankings, the Art & Design subjects at Shanghai Jiao Tong University have been ranked among the top 100 in the world for four consecutive years.
The School of Design relies on the strong foundation of engineering subjects in Shanghai Jiao Tong University and aims to represent the forefront of academic standards. It is inspired by the leading examples of strategic emerging industries such as smart manufacturing, digital innovation, green low-carbon, and builds a “design” + development strategy with a cross-disciplinary background. The school has earned first and second place prizes for its teaching achievements in Shanghai multiple times. It has also published national planning textbooks, and won the national “double creation” demonstration platform award, as well as Shanghai “innovative design” cultural and creative practice base prize. Many of our students were awarded the red dot, IF, IDEA and other internationally renowned design prizes. Our graduates have also been honored as national model workers, as Shanghai's top ten high-end creative talents, selected for Forbes China's elite list for those under 30-years-old, and more.
Global breadth is one of the essential characteristics of a tertiary education. The School of Design has established mature collaborative relationships with many world-renowned institutions such as Harvard University, MIT, University of Michigan, Cornell University, McGill University (Canada), University of New South Wales(Australia), Politecnico di Milano(Italy), KTH Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden), Eindhoven University of Technology (Netherlands) and the National University of Singapore. We also have stable cooperative foundations with universities and research institutions in “One Belt One Road” countries, as well as professional bonds in personnel training, scientific research, and overseas joint research centers.

1.Online application is open from October 10th to October 31st, 2019, every day from 9:00 to 22:00.
2.Candidates should log in to the “China Graduate Admissions Information Network” at the specified time (public website: http://yz.chsi.com.cn, education website: http://yz.chsi.cn) to view the entry requirements, and apply for registration according to admissions requirements set by the Ministry of Education, provincial education admissions examination institutions, and application sites. During the registration period, candidates can modify or re-enter online registration information, but individual candidate are only allowed to prepare a single application for admissions, and registration information cannot be modified after the application period closes.
3.The entrance examination is divided between a preliminary test and a second-round interview.
4.The preliminary test shall be carried out in accordance with the unified regulations of the Ministry of Education. The national postgraduate admission examination preliminary test time is from December 21 to 22, 2019 (8:30-11:30 am, 14:00-17:00 pm). The test subjects are:
①101 Ideological and Political Theory;
②201 English 1;
③337 Industrial Design Engineering;
④887 Professional Knowledge of Industrial Design Engineering.
The test methods are all written tests. No specified reference books or information about the scope of the examination content will be provided.
5.The second-round interviews mainly examine the candidate's innovative abilities, professional awareness and comprehensive qualities. The granting of second-round interviews will be based on the preliminary test scores (which must not be lower than the school’s basic score level) and other academic requirements.

According to the spirit of the relevant documents of the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Education, the master's students enrolled in accordance with the National Graduate Admissions Program are required to pay tuition fees.
