Training Program for IIDE (International Industrial Design Engineering) Launched by Shanghai Jiao Tong School of Design in 2022

Shanghai Jiao Tong University is launching an international full-time master’s degree program in International Industrial Design Engineering (IIDE), supported by the advantages and characteristics of the university’s international educational environment. The program will consist of simultaneous enrollment both at home and abroad, using the foundation built on the basis of its existing well-established cooperation with several first-class design, art, and architecture schools worldwide to set up a full-time master’s degree program taught in English with an advanced curriculum.

In recent years, the school’s Architecture and the Built Environment program has ranked among the top internationally in the QS world university rankings, while the Art and Design program ranked in the top 50 in 2015 and 2016.

Program Introduction

The IIDE program aims to enable resident Chinese students to receive a world-class design education and to cultivate leaders in the field of design without traveling abroad. It features the following elements:

• The program will consist of simultaneous enrollment both at home and abroad. The ratio of students (at home and abroad) will approach 1:1 as the program matures. This will allow for the full realization of international exchange and the synergy of design ideas.
• Abundant opportunities for study and exchange abroad will be provided in collaboration with cooperating universities. This will allow students to experience different design cultures.
• In addition, a wealth of internship opportunities in diverse fields will be established with top-leading companies in China and abroad. Students can enrich their engineering design experience, abilities in cross-cultural cooperation, and international vision through such programs.

About 80% of the program’s 15 professors hold doctorates, and all of them have overseas experience. A number of teachers have been recognized as excellent instructors by the university, and also have been recipients of China’s top 10 industrial design educators award, the Young “Yangtze Scholars” award and other honors.

​Tuition fees

• The tuition for the IIDE program is RMB 48,000/year, and the length of the program is 2.5 years, amounting to RMB 120,000 in total.
• 30% of freshmen can obtain full or half scholarships.
• All enrolled students have the chance to receive the National Scholarship, Scholarship for Excellence, Scholarship for Low Income Students, and various special scholarships.  

Excellent students can complete the program in 2 years (with full tuition fees paid). For specific requirements, please refer to the public tuition fee program on the website of our school’s financial planning department (www.jdcw.sjtu.edu.cn).

Program Objective

This program aimed at answeing the growing needs of high-end equipment design, intelligent manufacturing, new media and digital innovation. It focus on three areas: design and intelligent technology, design and social change, design and lifestyle. Through practical curriculum construction, advanced experts from industry and comprehensive education resources, it cultivates high-end design professionals who can work and act with a global view.

​Training Requirement​

This program required students to participate in design practice and competitions, as well as writing papers. Students should finish their graduation thesis and approved by an academic committee composed of school teacher and professional tutors.

Training Mode

Based on its existing foundation for university cooperation, the School of Design has invited  faculty from world-class design, art and architecture schools to participate in course development. Outstanding designers from AIC, COMAC, Alibaba, Huawei, and Tencent have been invited to participate in course planning and guidance, so that students can be exposed to the industry’s most cutting-edge material and precedents.

Through a system of teacher-student selection and teacher identification, we will ensure that every student has access to faculty guidance. Mentors in the education sector will provide priority channels for prestigious employment opportunities.

设计学院依托现有合作基础，对标国际一流设计、艺术及建筑学院，邀请国际一流高校的师资参与课程建设；在工业课程方向，邀请上汽、商飞、阿里、华为、腾讯等国内外优秀设计师，参与课程规划和指导，让学生接触到业界最前沿内容和案例。

IIDE提供校企合作展开的工作坊实践机会，参与企业合作项目，丰富设计实践经验。同时，IIDE还将推行学校+业界双导师制度，校内可以通过师生互选和导师认领制度，保障每一位学生都能够得到老师的指导；制业界导师为指导学生提供优先就业通道。

​Facilities

The international branch of the School of Design is based in the Engineering Building. The building boasts a modern Art Deco style, and was designed by Slovakian-Hungarian master architect Laszlo Hudec. It has a prominent position and high value in the field of architectural art, and serves as an important landmark for design professionals and students to learn from and yearn for.

Scholarship system

IIDE offers generous awards for outstanding students, with 30 percent of new students receiving full or half-full scholarships.

International Exchange Opportunities

Global breadth is one of the essential characteristics of a tertiary education. The School of Design has established mature collaborative relationships with many world-renowned institutions such as Harvard University, MIT, University of Michigan, Cornell University, McGill University (Canada), University of New South Wales(Australia), Politecnico di Milano(Italy), KTH Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden), Eindhoven University of Technology (Netherlands) and the National University of Singapore. We also have a stable foundation for cooperation with universities and research institutions in “One Belt One Road” countries, as well as professional bonds in personnel training, scientific research, and overseas joint research centers.

IIDE enrollment and training are conducted in accordance with the relevant policies of the Ministry of Education. In the event of policy changes by the Ministry of Education, the program will adjust its policy accordingly. This training program may also be adjusted in accordance with Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s teaching reforms.
