How to apply

1. Contact your ideal supervisor and acquire an acceptance letter. PhD supervisors can be found on School of Design's official website: http://dschool.sjtu.edu.cn/en/faculty/teacher

Notes: The candidate is required to have a potential supervisor and acquire an acceptance letter before enrollment.

2. Complete the online application

Please log in to Shanghai Jiao Tong University's application system to upload your information and documents before deadline. http://apply.sjtu.edu.cn/c.asp?action=sign

3. Pay the application fee

The application fee is RMB 800 or USD 120, non-refundable and non-transferable after payment. You can pay by online payment or bank transfer in the application system.

Required Documents for application:

1. Degree certificates. If you are unable to provide your degree by the time of application, please provide a letter from your current university to state your expected graduation date. The degree should be acquired before the date of enrollment you apply for.

2. Official transcripts in Chinese or English

3. Personal Statement

4. Resume 

5. Two recommendation letters

6. Language proficiency certificate and score report

    - Valid TOEFL or Academic IELTS 

    - Native English speakers or applicants with a bachelor degree acquired from English-speaking countries can be waived from language requirements

7. Scan of your passport's personal information page

8. Passport-size photo

9. Protfolio (preference)

10. Awards and Honors (if available)

Attention: If your documents are not in English or Chinese, please have them translated into English or Chinese by authorized translation agencies, then upload the translated and original version in the online application system.

Scholarships

Basically, for incoming international graduate students, there are two channels for scholarship application: through Shanghai Jiao Tong University or through Chinese Embassies/Consulates in the home country.

Applicants may choose only one application channel. Replicated applications through more than one channels is not allowed.

How to Apply:

• Apply for scholarships through SJTU

SJTU provides different types of scholarships to international graduate students as the following:

When applying at http://apply.sjtu.edu.cn/ applicants should choose "apply for scholarship through SJTU" and follow the steps online. Applicants should complete the scholarship application procedures in time according to the requirements of the university.The earlier an applicant completes the application, the sooner he/she receives an offer of admission and scholarships if the review result from the university is positive. Applicants can check the scholarships result through the application system. The formal offer of scholarships will be sent along with the formal admission letter.

• Apply for scholarships through Chinese Embassies/Consulates in the home country

Applicants may also apply to the Chinese Embassies/Consulates in the home country for scholarship opportunities. The application schedule varies from country to country (usually from November to April). 

Please consult the Chinese Embassy/Consulate about its application schedule, eligibility, requirements, procedures, documents, agency number, program category type and so on in advance.

Important Notes:

• In general, scholarships duration cannot be extended. 
• For international students admitted in the special graduate programs with university scholarships (Doctoral Program type III/Master Program type II/Master Program type III) in Shanghai Advanced Institute of Finance, Antai College of Economics & Management and USC-SJTU Institute of Cultural and Creative Industry, China-UK Low Carbon College, the scholarship will only cover the university’s standard tuition of 28,900RMB/Year for master’s programs), and students will have to pay the rest of the tuition of these programs.
• Graduate students in SJTU can also apply for certain TA or RA positions on campus. 

• All scholarship recipients are obliged to participate in the annual scholarship review in April and/or May which will confirm their scholarship status in the next academic year.
