Shanghai Jiao Tong University, founded in 1896, is one of China’s two oldest universities and the most renowned. The university is administered by the Ministry of Education of China and jointly funded with Shanghai Municipality. In more than one hundred and twenty years and across three centuries, today’s Shanghai Jiao Tong University is a comprehensive, research-intensive and global university. It belongs to the C-9 elite university group in China with an unrivalled international reputation. Indeed, the university is well underway to become a first-class world university.

Design education in the built environment at Shanghai Jiao Tong University can be traced back to the early twentieth century. In December 2017, the University regrouped the design related disciplines scattered in different schools, and amalgamated three departments, Architecture,Design and Landscape Architecture, to establish the new School of Design. The general discipline cluster, named under “innovative design”, has been identified by the university as one of the key 17 “double first class” discipline clusters with significant future support and investment from the university. Dwelling on the world-class platform, high-calibre students and the first-rate research of the university, the vision of the School of Design is to support the national development strategy and lay a foundation that combines humanities, arts, science and technology for education and research in the built environment field. It aims to become a global School of Design with a distinctive Shanghai Jiao Tong character, and a community of talented scholars and design practitioners.

The establishment of Shanghai Jiao Tong School of Design coincides with a rare opportunity: the state-initiated strategic transformation from “Made in China” to “Designed in China”, and the ambitious plan from the municipality to turn Shanghai into the “Capital of Design” and “Centre for Science and Technology Innovation”.
