​Liu Jie, School of Design Professor, Elected to Join International Committee for Wood

Tina Wik, Chairman of the International Wood Committee of the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), recently sent a letter to Professor LIU Jie, from the School of Design, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, congratulating him on being elected as an Expert Member.

The International Council for the Conservation of Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) focuses on the field of cultural heritage protection and is the only global non-governmental international organization in this field. It aims to promote the development of relevant theories, methods and technological applications in the protection of architectural and archaeological sites. At the same time, the Council is a multidisciplinary expert organization, whose members include architects, historians, archaeologists, art historians, geographers, anthropologists, engineers and urban and rural planners, and more. It promotes standards for the protection of different types of cultural heritage sites such as buildings, historical cities, cultural landscapes and archaeological sites, as well as relevant technical methods.

The ICOMOS - International Wood Committee (IIWC) is one of the special scientific committees which aims to promote international cooperation in the field of wood protection in buildings and structures. The Council provides advice on the development of programs in the field, while coordinating, researching and disseminating expertise on timber construction and bridges.

Professor LIU Jie is currently a professor, doctoral supervisor, and department head of the Department of Architecture, School of Design, and director of the Wooden Architecture Research and Design Center, Deputy Director of the Professional Committee of Residential Architecture of the Chinese National Architecture Research Association, member of the Academic Committee of Residential Architecture of the Architectural Society of China, academic member of the Professional Committee of Architectural History of the Chinese Society for the History of Science and Technology, member of the Professional Committee of Architectural Archeology of the Chinese Archaeological Society, and timber of the China Engineering Construction Standardization Association. He is also a member of the Professional Committee of Composite Material Structures, and the vice chairman of the Professional Committee of Wood and Bamboo Structure of the Shanghai Civil Engineering Society.

His research fields are closely related to wood structure buildings (including bridges) and wood products. During his nearly 30 years of scientific research career, he has been mainly engaged in the history of ancient wood structure technology in the East and the West, and the research and design of Chinese traditional and modern buildings with wooden structures. His research has focused on the development and evolution of ancient Chinese wooden bridges, green building and building industrialization, the research and compilation of technical building standards for domestic and foreign wooden structures, and building, planning and consulting in the field of modern wood structures.

As an advocate of comprehensive and systematic research on covered bridges in China, he is one of the most important researchers in this field. In 2004 he founded the Chinese Scholarly Association of Covered Bridges and the only professional research forum on covered bridges in China—"the International Academic Symposium on Covered Bridges in China." It has successfully convened seven times, and has become an influential international academic conference in the academic field of wooden bridges.
