A Delegation from Hong Kong Polytechnic University Arrives at the School of Design
On June 16, LEE Kun-Pyo, Dean and Swire Chair Professor of Design of the School of Design, Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), visited the School of Design of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Ruan Xing, Dean, Cao Yongkang, Vice Dean and Zhang Zhan, Deputy Head of Design Department and relevant personnel from the Office of External Relations accompanied the visit.
Professor Lee visited the newly completed design building and surveyed the 2023 Graduation Design Exhibition showcased in the building. The two sides then held a meeting. Ruan Xing first welcomed Lee’s visit on behalf of the School of Design, and mentioned that the Hong Kong Polytechnic University is one of the world’s leading universities in the field of design. The two sides have maintained a high level of active academic and student exchange since the establishment of the School of Design in 2019. At the meeting, Lee introduced PolyU Design. The PolyU Design is committed to cultivating design talent with innovative thinking and interdisciplinary capabilities to meet the design needs of society. The School has four degree programs and nine design disciplines, covering environmental design, information design, interaction design, interior design, product design, service design, and more. It boasts 900 undergraduate and graduate students every year. The two sides also discussed future possibilities for cooperation, including dual master’s degree programs and other possibilities.

The history of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University dates to the Hong Kong Government Advanced Technical Institute established in 1937. It is the first government-funded institution in Hong Kong to provide engineering education. It is the only institution of higher education in Hong Kong that has a separate School of Design (PolyU Design). The School was ranked 15th in the QS World University Rankings by Subject - Art and Design in 2020 and is consistently among the top 20 in the world. In 2009, BusinessWeek rated its Master of Design (Design Strategies) program one of the World's 30 Best Design Thinking Program. In 2013, PolyU Design became the only School from Asia listed in Business Insider's World's Best 25 Design School. It was listed as one of the Top 10 Best Industrial Design Schools in the World in 2015.
