ZHANG Haiao, Honor Award Winner of 2021 AIA Shanghai Design Awards

ZHANG Haiao, Associate Professor in Practice from Shanghai Jiao Tong School of Design has recently won the highest award in the Community Architecture category of 2021 AIA Shanghai Design Awards, for his urban renewal project of “Dongshan Meat and Vegetable Market”.

The project is located at the Dongshan area in Guangzhou, which shared a history of more than 2,000 years. For the outside space, the design incorporates a set of traditional “Qi Lou” to elevate the facade of the building and enlarge space for relaxing and having chitchats. “Qi Lou” space adopts the form of arcades, which enriches the spatial experience. As for the interior renovation strategy, they adjust the lighting at the top of the passages, optimizing the original untidiness and combing the signboard to make the interior space much more enjoyable.

ZHANG Haiao and his design studio Oumoumou believes the significance of renovating traditional space is not only about the physical and material environment, but also the reconstruction of daily life scenarios involving cooking and eating. A rejuvenated historical site that incorporates user needs and contemporary lifestyle is the redefinition of traditional market culture.

The AlA award is one of the most respected programs in the architectural profession. The purpose of the Annual Design Awards program is to encourage and recognize distinguished architectural achievements of architects, clients, and consultants. Collectively they work to improve the built environment by shaping the quality of life through design excellence.
