Design Work

Introduction

China’s rural issues are very complex. It is impossible to solve rural issues by simply using architecture or building houses. Most of the successful rural practices in China are focused on villages which have rich tourism, historical and cultural, or industrial resources. But most generic villages are still ignored. Therefore, the object of research in this proposal is the generic villages in China. In the context of China's full entry into a mediatized society, this proposal combines architectural ideas — situationism and spatial practice strategies, using new media to propose a brand-new rural revitalization plan. The idea of situationism is to abandon the design ideas of functionalism and rationalism, which are symbols of modernist architecture. Situationist emphasize the importance of daily life and life experience. Rural construction should no longer adopt urban construction methods, but should focus on the construction of life situations. The core of this proposal is to construct a network platform APP, the APP name is "Cloud Raising Village". All generic villages in China will be included in this APP system. Each village uses some spatial practice strategies to set up multiple visual fields. The visual field can present the various rural spatial forms or the life situation of the villagers, and show people the different spaces, production methods, and life scenes in the village through pictures, videos, webcasts and other methods on the APP. Netizens can search for the villages and visual fields of villages they are interested in on this app, and support their favorite villages through network traffic, donations, advertising, and interaction and product purchases. This can not only make people better understand the villages in different parts of China, but can also transform internet traffic (people’s attention) into a force to promote rural development.

Thoughts of this competition

It is important to choose the right direction at the beginning of the competition. Of course, this must be based on a deep understanding of the competition topic and the characteristics of the competition itself. A good tutor is also very important. I am thankful for our competition tutor Ms. Zhang Ziqi. She showed the right direction every time when we discussed the proposal. Hope is an architectural design competition with features of research and academic work, which is an important reason why I choose to do this academic proposal. More importantly, no matter what the results are, one should do it with a learning attitude and trust in one’s intuition. You will gain more through the process than in the results themselves.

Design Work

Introduction

The growing group of delivery workers, reconstituting society, has become a brand new scenery in cities after the pandemic.

They walk through restaurants, bringing new social problems into public consciousness. Their unpleasant working conditions and lack of social dignity are widely discussed in a context in which fewer people chose to eat out due to the convenience of virtualized technology. The bonds among people seems to be weakened, despite the end of pandemic.

So we ask ourselves, how to go along with the trend, improve delivery workers’ conditions, but wake up the energy of the city at the same time?

We raise a new kind of public building. By introducing special lanes for deliveries into high-rise buildings, we strengthen the communication and relation between delivery workers, restaurants and costumers, and try to stimulate a brand new vitality in the city in the post-pandemic era.

Thoughts of this competition

During the initial discussion of the proposal, we diverged in many directions, trying to combine new technologies to design an efficient take-out process to solve the problem. However, as the discussion progressed, we realized that we should return to space, so the final solution was designed with different spatial modules for different groups of functional needs, and these modules were combined to form our defined food and beverage aggregator. At the same time, this combination of possibilities also allows the solution not to be limited to a given area, but can be flexibly adjusted as needed, which is also a response to the post-epidemic era.

For this entry, two of our team members spent a lot of effort on pre-concept and spatial module pushing, and also because the preparation cycle took place over the summer and we all had our own practice projects, we squeezed in two weeks of online communication halfway through. The efficiency of the work did suffer, and we ended up with less than a week to produce the drawings, but luckily we pushed through and both of us were relieved to turn in the drawings.

During this process, our instructor Mr. You helped us a lot, and pulled us back in time when we were wandering in many dazzling brainstorms, and gave us a lot of confidence when we were confused. Because of him we were able to finish this competition successfully, and we are really grateful to him.

The topic of this competition seemed to us to be of great value. The rapid development of the online office model and the new spaces and technologies that come with it make it urgent for us to stop and think about the direction of our lives. This competition is an opportunity for us to look at our lives and observe the world, and to capture some of the good things we can expect from the future in these rapidly changing times. It is also a check and exercise of ability and we hope that we can make further progress in the rest of our study career.
