The ARCASIA AWARDS FOR ARCHITECTURE 2021 announced their list of winners on Oct 31, 2021. The “Pocket Plaza, Yongjia Road, Shanghai, China” designed by ARCHMIXING and led by Zhuang Shen, Professor of the School of Design, Shanghai Jiao Tong University won the GOLD prize for “SOCIAL AND CULTURAL BUILDINGS” and the SPECIAL AWARD for “SOCIALLY RESPONSIBLE ARCHITECTURE” .

SOCIAL RESPONSIBLE ARCHITECTURE
The Pocket Plaza is located in the old district of downtown Shanghai, surrounded by old-fashioned Lanes. Yongkang and Xiangyang South Roads and new vibrant commercial space are not far from the site. The government hopes to demolish the old dangerous houses and transform the areas they previously occupied into space for public exchange. “Familiarity” and “Changeability” are two features the designer seeks to embody in this structure. Steel-wood structured open porches with seats underneath and a dryland fountain in the middle square were employed not only to sculpt an atmosphere suitable for both quiet and dynamic activities, but also to evoke various possibilities for use. At the end of the pocket plaza, there is a service station, which is closely suited to the daily life of citizens. The brick red paving and the green steel pillars are actively blended with the streets in front and the houses on both sides, forming a familiar landscape for pedestrians and nearby residents.

ARCASIA has instituted the annual ARCASIA AWARDS FOR ARCHITECTURE (AAA) and it has been the highest award of architecture in Asia. The objective of the ARCASIA AWARDS FOR ARCHITECTURES (AAA) is to acknowledge exemplary architectural work and in doing so celebrate the Asian spirit, encourage the development and improvement of the Asian built environment and enhance of the awareness of the role of architects in the socio-economic and cultural life of Asian countries.
The ARCASIA Award also aims to demonstrate that good architecture is a key positive influence on the human environment and that successful physical development in Asia need not be in disharmony with the cultural values,national identity or the natural environment of developing countries in Asia.
