The First Lesson of IIDE

The construction of smart cities and the wide application of big data of traffic have increasingly influenced people's life and travel patterns. With the development of technologies and applications such as Internet of Vehicles, smart infrastructure, big data, new business models, and servitization of travel, breaking the past travel experience and promoting intelligent mobility will become the future trend. The course corporate with the industry to conduct further research on intelligent mobility and transportation experience design, and propose innovative solutions to future intelligent mobility.

The project "Intelligent Mobility Research and Design" jointly carried out by SAIC Design and School of Design began in the engineering hall of Xuhui Campus. This course is taught jointly by Professor Han Ting and designers from SAIC, aiming to introduce the design practice of industry into the classroom, cultivate students' practical design ability, and jointly explore the development trend of automotive design and the possibility of intelligent mobility in megacities in the next ten years.

After Professor Han’s opening speech, SAIC designer Huang Qinghui briefly introduced SAIC, explained the design process of SAIC and automotive design and development process in SAIC, and finally proposed the trend of automotive design and development process, such as intelligentizing of design process and more user-experience-oriented.

This September, after a long period of isolation, the class of 2020 international Master of Industrial Design engineering (IIDE) students walked into Shanghai Jiaotong University and began their learning journey on the campus.

IIDE program, an international graduate program launched by the school of design, aims at better serving Shanghai's construction of global science and technology innovation center which has global influence, better serving the construction of "city of design", cultivating professional leaders with Chinese cultural deposits, ethical values, international vision and truth-seeking spirit, who shoulder their own responsibility of building a community with a shared future for mankind, as well as contribute to world design ideas. This program cooperates with famous universities, enterprises and excellent designers at home and abroad to develop curriculum so that students can be exposed to the most cutting-edge contents and cases in the design industry. Besides, students can experience the whole process of design thinking, understand the way of design thinking, and apply it to industrial applications in order to enrich engineering design experience.


  •  Strategic Design Innovation

Strategic Design Innovation is a design studio course led by professor Han. The course is designed to make students understand the concept, history and current situation of design thinking and master the process, framework, method and relevant tools of design thinking. Based on the actual project, students need to start from the most fundamental needs of the clients, convert problems and challenges into opportunities for innovation, and find effective solutions through fast prototyping and iterative testing. From gaining insights into customer needs, to working out solutions and verification testing of prototype, the entire process fully considers human values, technical feasibility and commercial viabilities to achieve truly effective business innovation.

The first lesson is to visit TANG Consulting, which is famous for its experience design service. On the morning of September 11, 2020, the students of IIDE program followed professor Han to TANG Consulting, visited TANG’s office, and had an in-depth exchange and discussion with TANG’s partners.

First of all, the person in charge led students to visit the working environment of TANG Consulting and appreciate the open, free working space of TANG Consulting. The person in charge also gave a brief introduction to the working spaces of different teams, including UX and PX teams.

Then, Professor Han Ting, the head of the college, introduced the contributions and achievements of TANG Consulting in the field of experience and business, and Mrs. Cai Qingqing, the partner of Tang Consulting, gave a wonderful speech on experience thinking.

"TANG's mission is to empower the growth of brand value. TANG focuses not only on products and services, but also on business, and is committed to enhancing brand value through holistic design."

Mrs. Cai introduced different meanings of experience to consumers and enterprises from multiple perspectives and explained how to drive holistic experience innovation in the context of consumption upgrades. With examples of how "Classmate Xiaoming" and "Xiaoguan Tea", Mrs. Cai described how TANG helped Xiaoguan Tea carry out innovation by incorporating traditional tea culture into modern lifestyle, making a disruptive user positioning, constructing brand mechanisms from the perspectives of products, services, user behavior, environment and information communication, establishing relationships between brands and users from aspects such as sense of ceremony, sense of story, and respect for users.

During the speech, the students had an in-depth discussion with Mrs. Cai and Mr. Mike, the partner of TANG, on what was a good experience and the brand concept of Xiaoguan Tea. Through discussion, students had a deeper understanding about the application of experience thinking in business scenarios.

Before leaving, the teachers and students of Shanghai Jiaotong University were presented with the book Experience Thinking prepared by TANG Consulting and took a photo with Tang 's designers. The trip to TANG Consulting ended successfully!

Then, Mr. Fu, the winner of 2014 SAIC Design Challenge and the designer from SAIC, introduced his award-winning works and creative process to students, compared the differences between the design after work and the design in his student days, so as to inspire students to jump out of students' stereotype and pay attention to the limitations in the real design.

Confronted with an unfamiliar field of design, students put forward many questions to SAIC designers, had a thorough discussion, kept detailed notes, and wrote down their thoughts on the course:

"Today, the design team of SAIC introduced to us the whole development process of the automotive industry, which made me understand that design is not only an innovation in appearance, but also oriented towards manufacturing, cost, users and market... entire industrial chain. In the future design practice, I will pay more attention to the project process management and the time allocation, as well as communication with all team members. In addition, what impressed me most was how designers adhered to their original intention and passion, kept doing one thing consistently for several years and finally achieved success under the difficult automotive development environment.”

"In the real project, the design team and the R&D team need to cooperate deeply and negotiate with each other to complete the development of final product. Teachers talked about the automotive development process, the designer's positioning in the automotive industry, and also told the experience and observation in automotive design industry. I benefited a lot from these details, perspectives and professional interpretations. Looking forward to the following courses!”

​At the end of the class, the teachers from SAIC Design released the project of this class. This project takes "intelligent mobility pattern in 2030" as the entry point, requires students to break through the constraints of traditional design thinking on the basis of a lot of background research, and studies the impact of intelligent technology on design, interaction and travel in a forward-looking way. At the same time, students need to comprehensively analyze possible changes in the form of mega cities, road traffic systems, personal and family life, and propose solutions to the future mobility of individuals and families.

After class, all the teachers and students took a photo in front of the engineering hall in Xu Hui Campus to commemorate the successful opening of the first IIDE program. Let us expect the students of IIDE to propose vital and innovative solutions to future intelligent mobility!
