Chair of the International Federation of Landscape Architects James Hayter Visits Shanghai Jiaotong University’s School of Design


On May 9, 2019, Adelaide University professor and chair of the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) James Hayter was invited to visit the Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Design. He was hosted by Dean Ruan Xing, Vice Dean Che Shengquan, head of the department of landscape architecture Wang Yun, assistant head of the school of architecture Xuan Huang and other members of the school.

Firstly, Dean Ruan introduced the Jiaotong University’s background and the school of design’s history, as well as the school’s plans for the future. James Hayter described the background of Adelaide University and its academic development from the perspective of the school’s ranking, its professional emphasis, and its curriculum. Next, both parties discussed future collaboration.

They exchanged opinions on early-stage ideas for setting up a site for internships in Australia, and for hosting a joint exhibition, in addition to student exchanges, summer schools, design workshops and more. This advanced a thorough discussion into the possibility of future cooperation, with both parties agreeing that they should energetically expand a new form of cooperation.

In addition, James Hayter used the topic of “The Revitalization of the Urban Waterfront” to provide guidance on ways to combine design practice and academic achievement in the course of the work performed by the department of landscape architecture.
