The School of Architecture of Colombo, Sri Lanka Visits the School  of Design, and Takes Part in Academic Exchange 


On the afternoon of September 16, the School of Architecture of Colombo, Sri Lanka visited the School of Design, with 26 students and professors, and conducted a discussion with faculty and students at Shanghai Jiao Tong. The vice dean of the department of architecture Cao Yongkang, youth professor Lai Dayi and Chairman  Du Qian received the guests. Lai Dayi presided over the exchange.


Both parties introduced the situations in their respective schools. Subsequently, groups, mostly consisting of graduate students, went over some of the main trends and results of research in related fields.

Student Cao Ting presented on the topic of the overall impact of temperature, moisture, and light on sleep, and explored the potential for architectural design to impact the lived environment.

Student Yu Feng presented on design that follows from dreams, and emphasized the importance of imagination in architectural design work.

 Student Zhang Enming presented on saving traditional villages,and exhibited Jiao Tong University’s exploration of social practice.

A student group from Colombo went over “the urgency of architectural implementation,” “urban vision,” and other topics, which were well received.

The Colombo School of Architecture visited the Xujiahui campus’s Hall of Engineering, and expressed enthusiastic interest in students at work in departmental classrooms, and in the student work exhibited in the lobby.

As a result of this exchange, each party will continue to deepen their awareness and understanding of eachother, and both look forward to deeper exchange in the future.

The Colombo School of Architecture is located in the capital of Sri Lanka. It is the only private architectural school in the country. It has 30 years of history. Its undergraduate degree in architecture lasts five years, and in 2011 earned certification from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), and in 2012 from the Sri Lankan Institute of Architects (SLIA).  In recent years, the school has devoted itself to training talent in areas related to architectural design, and has promoted exchange in the field of international architectural design.
