"Streets are the most basic public products of cities. It is where public activities are held and where relationships among urban residents the closest...”
——From City of Shanghai Street Design Guidelines
Five years from now, the dramatic decline in population growth and the booming development of urban rail transit, along with the subsequent shrinking demand for private vehicles and the rising of standards for pedestrian systems, may become a trend. That is likely to bring about a restructuring of urban public spaces. Land is the scarcest resource in the city, and how to transform the streets that could be too wide in the future or how to use the land that will be vacated after the reduction of traffic lanes is a challenge that must be faced.
Therefore, I hope that each student participating in this competition will choose an existing wide two-way street in her / his own city, with more than three lanes in each direction, and make as many site visits as needed to observe and analyze.
1. The uses and interfaces of the buildings on both sides of the street (whether there is a positive spatial and visual connection with the sidewalk);
2. Continuity and inclusiveness of sidewalks (whether there is the possibility of leisure, interaction, fitness, entertainment, and small business activities);
3. Distribution of urban furniture;
4. Parking of motor vehicles and bicycles.
Based on this research, within the length of one block, make a design that narrows the street by at least a third of its existing width. In essence, this exercise is about quality of urban life, and questions to consider include:
1. Reorganize traffic (for example, make separate vehicular ways and pedestrian walkways);
2. Plan street life;
3. What is the appropriate size of building volume for this street?
4. What might be the new building programs? Need to be specific: business (what kind of stores, eateries, and / or coffee shops); public facilities, including: sports, culture, education, parks; and / or housing (what type)?
5. Design the spatial, functional, and perceptual relationship between building content and sidewalks, bicycle lanes, and vehicular lanes;
6. If the street building is proposed to have mixed functions, design the relationship between functions;
7. Basic considerations of architectural design such as material, structure, construction and form.
Encourage collaboration between architecture and planning students.
