The development of the concept of ecological design within the discipline of landscape architecture is introduced and key influences and antecedents are introduced. Two applied design theories used by the presenter of the ‘Rights of Nature’ and ‘Technological Imagination’ are examined in relationship to the contemporary issues of climate change, sea level rise, post-industrial landscapes, population migration and civic design.

Broad principles of ecological design are advanced including the need to maintain natural and managed ecosystems; to meet the inherent needs of humans and the economy within the natural world; to emulate the inherent designs of nature, to advance renewable resources and recycling and efficient use of materials and energy; to conserve natural ecosystems and indigenous biodiversity; and to increase environmental literacy to build sustainable development, resource conservation, and protection of the natural world. Case studies from Harvard Design School Graduate Advanced Studios are presented with a range of application of principles and themes of ecological design to the planning and management of human communities, parks and riverway networks using indigenous materials and methods. Research and design investigations in these studios are located in a range of landscape venues including Thailand, Ireland and North America. The principles and practices of ecological planning and design have much to contribute to the urgent need to make rapid and tangible progress towards addressing climate change and resilient human economies and the presentation looking to the future will speculate on the impact of design and design education on the contemporary world.
