Fan Wenbing 范文兵, PhD, is Head and Professor of Department of Architecture at School of Design, Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He also serves as director of SJTU Architectural Innovation Experimental Center, researcher of SJTU China Institute of Urban Governance, and Founder / Chief Architect of Atelier Fan. Heis a Member of Council of CAC-ASC (Committee of Architectural Criticism, Architectural Society of China), Council of IAE-ASC (Institute of Architectural Education, Architectural Society of China) and DAC-ASSC (Department of Architectural Creation, Architectural Society of Shanghai China).
Fan obtained his bachelor, master degree and doctor's degree in Department of Architecture at College of Architecture and Urban Planning,Tongji University. From 2004 to 2005, he was selected in the French Presidential Program "150 Chinese Architects in France" to research urban renewal in France. From 2012 to 2013, he was awarded by CSC (China Scholarship Council) in theNational Program "YouthBackbone Teacher Training" to study design pedagogy in the United States.
Fan’s main achievements in education include: Boosteel Outstanding Teacher, Excellent Teaching Plan Award of China Steering Committee of Architectural Education, Shanghai-level Quality Course, Shanghai Teaching Achievement Awards, SJTU "Distinguished Professor", SJTU " The Most Popular Teacher" etc. He guided students to win over 20 design awards at home and abroad.
Fan’s main achievements of design include: WAF (World Architecture Festival) shortlisted award, WAN Awards(World News Award) longlisted award, the excellent design scheme award of ASC,and second prize of Architectural Creation Award of ASSC. His works have been selected into " Shanghai International Young Architects Design exhibition", " Shanghai Biennale", " Chengdu International Biennale", " Shenzhen Hong Kong Urban Architecture Biennale" and " Shanghai Urban Space Art Season".
Fan’s academic research includes three interests: 1. the theory and practice of architectural education; 2. the Chinese contemporary architectural design practice; 3. urban renewal of metropolis Shanghai. He has presided over and participated in several scientific research projects,including NSFC (National Natural Science Foundation of China), Shanghai Pujiang Talent Plan, and Shanghai Key Undergraduate Teaching Reform. He has published four academic books and more than 20 high-quality papers in leading academicjournals, such as Architectural Journal [建筑学报], Time+ Architecture [时代建筑]and The Architect [建筑师] etc. He has widely published architectural criticism essays on the mainstream traditional and new media in China, such as Jiefang Daily[解放日报], Wen Hui Bao[文汇报], The Paper[澎湃新闻], Gooood[谷得网], Position[有方网] and Douban[豆瓣网]. He is an active scholar in the field of Architectural Education and Architectural Criticism in China, and also a pioneer in Urban Renewal in Shanghai.

1. “Xichao Bookstoreof Shanghai Jiao Tong University (2019)” has been published in more than tenWeChat official accounts and websites, with a total of over 400000 hits. Professionaljournals have published several papers to analyze it. This project has beenreported by Jiefang Daily, Xinmin Evening News, PowerChina app and othermainstream media. 1 Research Interests
1.1 Research on the theoryand practice of architectural education
(1) From the perspective of history and theory, researchstudies the history, current situation and future trend of architecturaleducation at home and abroad.
(2) From the perspective of personnel training, researchmakes empirical research on architectural education cases at home and abroad,and discusses the improvement of pedagogy.
(3) From the perspective of interaction amongarchitectural education, design practice and academic research, research givesfull play of the "academic productivity" of architectural educationto explore the new concept and method of architecture.
1.2 Research on the Chinesecontemporary architectural design practice (CCADP)
Based on the clear understanding of the history andfuture trend of the international architecture fields, combined with thespecific background of Chinese contemporary history, research discusses CCADPfrom 1950's to 2010's. Research attempts to clarify the change track of CCADP,analyze the multiple choices of Chinese architects, face up to various problemsat present, and explore the future direction of Chinese architectural design.
1.3 Research on urban renewal ofmetropolis Shanghai
Based on the theories and methods of urban plan, urbansociology, anthropology, architecture, economics, historical preservationtheory and history, research studies the theory and practice of urban renewalin metropolis Shanghai.
