SINO-U.S. CLIMATE CHANGE AND FUTURE DESIGN FORUM
Climate change is reshaping urban and rural environments. Design plays a crucial role in enabling climate adaptation and mitigation efforts. The Sino-U.S. Centre for Climate Change and Design, a collaborative initiative between Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Columbia University, integrates design principles into climate response strategies. This center aims to provide practical and actionable design and product solutions that facilitate global adaptation and mitigation, leading the green transformation in urban, architectural, and product design. The center combines the expertise of Columbia Climate School in foundational research with the strengths of Shanghai Jiao Tong University's School of Design in industrial, architectural, landscape, and territorial space design to promote the green transformation of economic development. In urban design, it advocates for sustainable urban renewal and planning, utilizing green infrastructure, smart transportation systems, and energy-efficient community designs to reduce the urban carbon footprint and enhance the city's climate resilience. In architecture, it explores the use of energy-saving technologies, sustainable materials, and ecological principles, reduce energy consumption and improve climate adaptability. The center also champions technological innovation in product design, advocating for resource-efficient, environmentally friendly products that minimize waste, extend product life, and foster a circular economy.
