Creating Places and Connecting Communities for Flourishing Cities
Abstract
The WHO Commission on Social Connection has recently identified loneliness and social isolation as critical public health challenges in ageing populations, linked to increased risks of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, depression, and dementia. This talk introduces the concept of “lonelygenic environments,” shifting the focus from individual-level explanations of loneliness to the broader roles of urban planning and social policy in fostering wellbeing for all.
The presenters will outline their latest research on lonelygenic environments and discuss potential solutions, including social prescribing and nature-based interventions. The talk will also highlight major research initiatives at the University of Sydney and UNSW, which support ongoing knowledge exchange, PhD co-supervision, and international collaboration.
