Call for 2023 'Save the Traditional Village' Workshop

The 2023 'Save the Traditional Villages' Workshop will be held soon.

The 'Save the Traditional Villages' Workshop belongs to the 'Global Engagement Program' of Shanghai Jiao Tong University, which aims to cultivate students' sense of responsibility towards a 'community of common destiny for all mankind'.

This is the Fifth session of the Workshop. The past four sessions have achieved good social practice results and stimulated students’ innovative thinking and potential. They have won the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School-level Social Practice Special Award and the 'Zhixing Cup' Shanghai Grand Prize in the College Student Social Practice Project Competition.

This year, the workshop will be held in transnational challenge mode. The first phase will take place in Dayu Village(打渔村) of Yunnan Province, China, and the second phase is tentatively scheduled to be held in Italy. The following is the notice of the specific activities of this Workshop.

BACKGROUND

With the development of urbanisation, traditional villages struggle to cope with the need for modern life. Traditional villages face problems like backward social and economic development, depopulation, shortage in infrastructure, deteriorating living environment, and deficient education and medical resources. Hence the migration of village dwellers for livelihood has become a common phenomenon. At the same time, the value of local heritage of the traditional villages has been impacted by contrasting cultures, leading them, in some cases, to their disappearance.

 Lashihai Lake, Yunnan

In 2023, as the fifth session of the 'Save the Traditional Village' serial workshop, we will continue to innovate on the basis of our heritage and always face up to new challenges. With the development of villages and productive land, a large number of wetlands and lakes have been destroyed artificially, resulting in an imbalance in the relationship between people and land and serious ecological problems. Therefore, to cope with these issues, the certain theme of this year's workshop is "the coexistence of people and land". We plan to explore new ways of preserving and developing traditional villages from multiple perspectives. This year, the workshop is going to be held in Dayu Village(打渔村) of Lashi Township, Yunnan Province.

Dayu Village(打渔村)is located in the north of Lashi Township, Yulong County, Lijiang City, Yunnan Province. It is the only village established along the lake in Lashi Town with a beautiful natural ecological environment. The overall layout of the houses gradually spreads from the mountains to the edge of Lashihai Lake(拉市海) like a ribbon. Every winter, there are about 30,000 migratory birds coming to Lashihai, including 9 species of endemic cherished and endangered birds. In conclusion, Lashihai Lake and Dayu Village both have high ecological value.

Traditional building in Dayu Village

The dwelling houses in Dayu Village are built near the Lashihai Lake(拉市海), with beautiful white walls and gray tiles. Most of these houses are traditional Naxi dwellings with great characteristics, which not only shows the unique courtyard layout, but also has unique architectural structure, paintings and carvings. All these issues lead to great historical and artistic value. As a result, the village was included in the third list of Chinese traditional villages in December 2021. However, there are also many problems in the conservation of Dayu Village(打渔村), such as the impact of modern civilization and tourism development on the local Naxi culture, which affect the village conservation and local ecological civilisation.

THEME

The 2023 'Saving Traditional Villages' workshop is promoted by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, organised by the School of Design, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the International Research Centre for Architectural Heritage Conservation. This workshop will make full use of the academic advantages of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. It is problem-oriented, combining fieldwork, professional counselling, and teamwork, so that young people in the mainland, Hong Kong, Macao, and international students can contribute their creativity and passion to provide more practical rescue plans to the disappearing Traditional villages.

The workshop will be conducted offline, inviting junior and above students in National Key Disciplines such as architecture, urban and rural planning, design, sociology, anthropology, rural economic management, etc. from mainland and Hong Kong and Macao universities. It is expected that there will be 15 mainland students (including international students) and 10 Hong Kong and Macao students. We encourage the integration of diverse backgrounds, and each school (excluding Shanghai Jiao Tong University) can register up to 5 people.

The workshop aims to:

  • Propose a practical plan for the protection and development of Days Village, which takes into account the preservation of water resources and ecological management, as well as the preservation of cultural heritage;
  • Utilise low-carbon concepts to develop adaptive designs for the transformation and utilisation of traditional dwellings. These designs will serve to support local tourism, and to preserve and inherit the local culture;
  • Introduce ideas for the ecological management of the lake.
